Trainer Charlie Appleby is hoping his promising filly Summer Romance can get firmly back on track with a big run in the Shadwell Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes at Salisbury on Thursday (15:40).

The daughter of Kingman looked a very exciting prospect when winning her first two starts in June, notably routing her rivals by six-lengths to take the Listed Empress Stakes at Newmarket in impressive style.

However, she was then turned over as odds-on favourite in the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot in July, though her trainer felt things conspired against Summer Romance that afternoon.

The Godolphin-owned filly will aim to resume her progress at Salisbury under William Buick, with the partnership 6/4 market leaders for the Group 3 contest.

Appleby is very much of a mind to forgive her last run, with the prior form putting Summer Romance firmly in the mix.

“We were happy to put a line through Summer Romance’s run at Ascot due to the ground and the way the race worked out,” Appleby said.

“She came out of that race well and has had a nice little break in the meantime.

“A repeat performance of her win in the Empress Stakes should put her bang there.”

The David Evans-trained Good Vibes was a neck and one place ahead of Summer Romance at Ascot when they met previously.

After a disappointing run at Newbury, she now comes to Salisbury having run third in the Group 2 Lowther at York recently and her trainer feels this race is the right one for the 13/2 chance Good Vibes.

“She ran very well at York considering she went to Newbury a few days before on softish ground,” said Evans.

“She probably would have been closer at York if she hadn’t been a little bit held up in her run.

“She seems in good order and she’s second top-rated in the race, so we have to take our chance.”

A field of 11 go to post at Salisbury for the Shadwell Dick Poole Fillies’ Stakes.
