Former Rhinos Tony Smith and Danny McGuire will have enjoyed Hull KR’s crucial win at Headingley to maintain survival hopes.

Leeds Rhinos missed the chance to pull clear of bottom spot in the Betfred Super League on Friday night as they slipped to a 36-16 defeat at home to fellow strugglers Hull KR.

The Robins, inspired by former Rhino Danny McGuire, scored three tries in the first 20 minutes at Headingley to open up a 14-0 lead but Leeds hit back and trailed by six at the interval.

KR made a strong start again in the second half with 12 points in the first 11 minutes and although the Rhinos managed to cut the deficit they were unable to sustain their fight back as the visitors ran out convincing winners.

The result means Hull KR join Leeds and Huddersfield on 16 points, two clear of bottom club London Broncos, who went down 36-22 at Hull FC on Thursday.

The Giants also suffered a damaging defeat on Friday as they failed to back-up their win over Salford in the previous round. Huddersfield slipped to a 32-28 defeat at home to play-off hopefuls Catalans Dragons as the Perpignan outfit made it two wins in a row to boost their chances of being involved in the battle for Betfred Super League Grand Final glory.

St Helens edged a step closer to securing the League Leaders’ Shield with a dominant 32-10 win over fierce rivals and defending champions Wigan Warriors.

Nearest challengers Warrington were beaten at home by Salford and Saints now boast a 10-point lead at the top of the table.

Castleford kept their play-off hopes alive and all-but extinguished Wakefield’s with a 38-16 win at Trinity thanks in part to a James Clare hat-trick.

Saints, Warrington and Hull FC hold the top three spots, Catalans are fourth on 24 points – two clear of Wigan in the final play-off place.

Castleford are in sixth and level on 22 points with the Warriors, while Salford are two points further back and still in with a real chance of gate-crashing the top five.

Saints are 5/6 to win the Betfred Super League Grand Final, Warrington are 2/1 and Catalans are available at 20/1.
