Rafael Benitez’s call for reinforcements has been answered by Newcastle on deadline day as the Premier League strugglers have got two deals over the line (Newcastle 25/1 – Top-10 Finish).
The Magpies have signed Miguel Almiron from MLS outfit Atlanta United for a fee in the region of £20million, a new club record, and have also snapped up full-back Antonio Barreca on loan from Monaco until the end of the season with the option of a permanent deal.
“I’m very happy and eager to start and to meet my new team-mates,” said Almiron. “The league is very competitive, this is a historic club, and Rafa Benitez himself was the main reason why I am here now.
“I think it is a great responsibility, something beautiful for me, and I will try to offer the best I can to repay the trust the club put in me.”
Newcastle boosted their survival chances with a 2-1 win over champions Manchester City on Tuesday and are now 13/2 to be relegated.
Elsewhere, Arsenal have completed the signing of Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona with the option of a permanent deal at the end of the season, but that may be the end of their deadline-day business.
Proposed moves for Yannick Carrasco and Ivan Perisic appear dead although they are still keen to land PSG midfielder Christopher Nkunku.
However, that switch could hinge on the French giants landing Idrissa Gueye – and Everton are determined to keep hold of their midfield star.
Top-four rivals Chelsea look set to keep hold of youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi as suitors Bayern Munich have suggested they are no longer pursuing deals in the winter window.
Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is on the verge of a switch to China, but Anthony Martial, who is back in favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has signed a new deal at Old Trafford.
