Trainer Gordon Elliott has confirmed stable star Shattered Love is still being prepared for a Gold Cup run this season, despite losing at Down Royal on Saturday (Shattered Love 20/1 – Gold Cup 2019 winner).

The seven-year-old was considered one of the favourites for the Blue Riband race by some after a superb campaign over fences last year.

She finished the year as a dual Grade One winner, including an impressive display in the JLT Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The bay mare made her seasonal reappearance last weekend in a Group Two contest at Down Royal but she failed to get the job done. Snow Falcon spoiled the party after a fine run but Elliott is refusing to panic as he tries to win the big race at Prestbury Park next year.

“Shattered Love ran well, she just blew up and ran on again to the line,” said Elliott.

“I don’t know where she’ll go next but she’s a proper mare, she’ll have come on no end for the race. I’m looking forward to getting her back out but she’ll have to be competing in all those Grade Ones now, it’s hard to place her.

“I’ll definitely be training her as a Gold Cup horse.”

Might Bite remains the ante-post favorutie for the contest at odds of 5/1 after he placed in the 2018 edition of the race. Native River is 7/1 to retain his crown, while Presenting Percy is available at odds of 6/1.
