Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez insists the squad believe they can cause an upset when they welcome Tottenham to St Mary’s on Wednesday (Match betting – 19/10 Southampton, 9/4 draw, 17/10 Tottenham).

The festive clash sees both sides arrive in strong form and well aware that a loss could see their ambitions for the campaign severely dashed.

Tottenham (33/1 Premier League outright) are already 13 points adrift of Chelsea and anything but a win could potentially end their hopes of mounting serious challenge for the Premier League title.

Meanwhile, Southampton need a win to keep alive their hopes of a top-six finish, already trailing sixth-placed Manchester United by nine points.

Spurs find themselves in good form after claiming back-to-back wins, while they have lost just once in their last five in all competitions.

However, Rodriguez believes there is reason for Saints to be positive, as they arrive unbeaten in four in all competitions and losing just once at home in the Premier League this term.

Rodriguez, who will be hoping his recent return to form will pave the way to an England call-up and possibly a place at the 2018 World Cup, has netted three Premier League goals this term, having spent the last two years on the sidelines.

The frontman admitted that Tottenham will put up a tough fight but insists Southampton can be a match for anyone when firing on all cylinders.

Rodriguez said: “Tottenham are a great side, and with the way they play it’s going to be very difficult, but I think if we’re at it it’s going to be a great game and something to enjoy.

“We’ve always got confidence in any game we play that if we stick to what we know and work on what we’ve been doing in training then hopefully it will show in the game.”
