Betfred’s Owen McMahon shares two tips for racing at Haydock Park on Friday.
Haydock Park Tips
The opener at Haydock on Friday is a 0-85 handicap over 1m2f for which seven go to post – and the one I like is MAGHLAAK for Charles Hills.
Making his racecourse debut as a three-year-old in August last year, the son of Muhaarar clearly hasn’t been easy to train, but the yard’s persistence is starting to pay off for he improved with every run last term and on the back of his reappearance at Goodwood just under three weeks ago, he looks to have taken another significant step forward over the winter.
In handicap company for the first time off a mark of 86, he more than held his own against horses well into the 90s. It’s strong form, and he’s entitled to come on for the run – never mind the fact he’s so unexposed.
Conditions are a slight concern, for his two turf runs so far were on ground described as soft and heavy, but that’s a chance you have to take for it’s a case of ‘we won’t know until we know’.
Bizarre Law is the main danger in my book but this isn’t a great race, with the majority of the field looking to bounce back from dire efforts last time out, so I’ll be disappointed if the selection can’t at least give us a run for our money here.
My final tip from Haydock is MAKAROVA in the card’s feature race – the Cecil Fail Stakes (Listed) over 6f.
Ed Walker’s four-year-old is currently double the price of favourite Gale Force Maya, which is fairly generous considering the latter was just under seven lengths behind the selection when they met in almost identical circumstances at Newmarket earlier this month.
The excuse for Gale Force Maya that day was the ground, so you’d imagine she will be much better suited by this quick ground with that run under her belt, but that’s a lot of lengths to make up on a younger, fresher horse who’s continuously improving.
The daughter of Acclamation has another red-hot piece of form behind the now 114-rated, Group 2 winner Azure Blue and her form is starting to suggest that a race like this is well within her grasp. Hopefully this is the one.
