The first of two Listed races at Goodwood on Friday is the Height Of Fashion Stakes – a 1m2f contest for three-year-old fillies – and at time of writing I think John & Thady Gosden’s INNER SPACE rates a good each-way bet.

She looked an extremely promising filly when bolting up in a novice event at Kempton in November last year but sorely disappointed in the G3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket last month.

I’m prepared to put a line through that run for several reasons. Not only did she give herself lots to do after a slow break, but she clearly had no business racing over 7f. Having travelled into contention rather stylishly, she was soon outpaced and given an easy time of things at the rear.

Also, this was at a time when the Gosden yard weren’t yet firing. In the last two weeks we’ve seen Soul Sister – currently second favourite for the Betfred Oaks – Honiton and Mostabshir bounce back from dire efforts to win rather impressively. Hopefully the selection, who should appreciate this step up in trip, can follow suit.

Just over an hour later is the Cocked Hat Stakes. Seven go to post for this 1m3f event, with the betting headed by Gregory for the Gosden team.

He’s undoubtedly a talented youngster with a big future. The form of his debut win at Haydock in April is very warm indeed and he possesses all the tools to go far in this game. However, he’s plenty short enough given his inexperience.

On the contrary, I think Charlie Johnston’s HADRIANUS is very generously priced based on his achievements to date.

The son of Galileo was narrowly beaten by subsequent Dante fifth Epicetus on his seasonal reappearance at Epsom last month – strong form – but was disappointing next time out in the G3 Chester Vase Stakes the other week.

He can be forgiven for that performance, as not only was it a strong race won by one of the favourites for the Betfred Derby but 1m4½f on soft ground may well have stretched him. I think this slightly shorter trip on better ground will suit a lot better.

Hadrianus is the highest-rated horse in the field, his yard is mustard at Goodwood and the booking of Frankie Dettori when John & Thady Gosden train the favourite is very eye-catching indeed. What’s not to like?
