On Sunday the drivers will take to the track in the principality of Monaco for the next round of the now shortened 22-race season. We preview the race and check out the odds available on Betfred…

Monaco GP 2023 Betting Tips

  • Back Fernando Alonso to win at 5/1
  • Back Nico Hulkenberg to Finish in the Points at 13/8
  • Back Valtteri Bottas to Finish in the Points at 2/1

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most historic on the Formula 1 calendar but many would say it is one of the least interesting in terms of on track action due to the nature of the tight and twisty turns of the track. This often leads to a race heavily dictated by how drivers do in qualifying and getting that good one-lap in on Saturday afternoon can make or break your weekend.

What we have this race though is a potential wildcard of inclement weather with rain forecast for the weekend. In the past we’ve seen wet races around the track end with many drivers already out of their cars having collided with various barriers. This should add some potential value for punters having seen a season dominated by the Red Bull pairing of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

In fact, this is the first time this season where the Dutchman heads into the weekend not as the odds-on favourite for the race. The current odds have the reigning two-time champion as a 6/5 to finish first with his teammate and the winner of the 2022 edition of the event Sergio Perez a 3/1 shot.

It isn’t just the weather that has seen a few drivers being noticeably shorter than they have been so far this season and that is the fact that the powerful DRS that the Red Bull cars have at their disposal will not be as important as at other tracks. This will lead to the likes of Charles Leclerc (4/1) and Fernando Alonso (5/1) being seen as very realistic chances of upsetting the early-season dominance of the two leading title protagonists.

Betting against either of the Red Bull drivers this season has not been a profitable endeavour whatsoever but if there was a race to take a chance on another team then this surely will be it.

The notion that Fernando Alonso could win around the streets of Monaco for the first time since 2007 is an enticing one and not only that, it is genuinely plausible. At 5/1, it is worth a punt that he can get that Aston Martin right up the grid and fend off all comers to take the victory.

If you want a bit of a shorter price then looking at the market for drivers to finish in the points then I like the chances of both veterans Nico Hulkenberg (13/8) and Valtteri Bottas (2/1) to find a way to keep their cars out of the barriers of sneak into the points.
