It’s just over a week until the Epsom Oaks/Derby weekend. Both historic Classics are sponsored by Betfred, and we’re very excited to be a part of what’s sure to be a couple of days of thrilling racing. Add the season-long caveat that it’s Frankie Dettori’s last year in the saddle and anticipation is off the scale.
Could the Italian sign off with a third success in the Derby? Or an incredible SEVENTH in the fillies’ Classic?
Oaks and Derby winners gallop thunderously into racing folklore. Let’s conjure up the odd legend or three to whet the appetite, so step forward please Nijinsky, Sea Bird II, Sir Ivor, Shergar, and Sea The Stars.
And as for the ladies, how about Oh So Sharp, Dunfermline, User Friendly, and Enable? Outstanding horses, champions all, that led their generations. Who will follow them is the dazzling puzzle that we need to solve – and here’s another entertaining slice of expert analysis to help do just that.
Some trainers avail themselves of the opportunity to gallop their charges around Epsom before the big day. It’s a unique test after all. Undulations, cambers, twists, and turns.
As John Gosden says in the material below, the great Vincent O’Brien used to bring his champions here for an exploratory spin. What’s unsaid but fairly clear is ‘if it was good enough for Vincent, ..’
Dettori’s mount in the Derby is a strapping son of the great Frankel. Presently around a 13/2 chance, Arrest bolted up in the Chester Vase recently. He’s shown his liking for easy ground, and would presumably not mind similar on the big day.
His illustrious sire handled everything, so perhaps the son will too. Here’s a galloping clue – Arrest having a breeze around Tattenham Corner, and a crack at that crucial home straight. Looks to have quite a high knee action to me, so cut in the ground could be a real bonus IF the weather gods are smiling.

As for the Road to Epsom in general, I’m attaching our latest offering below which includes a chat featuring the Frankies – Dettori and Foster. Oisin Murphy, in simply magnificent form, is here too.
Throw in Epsom clerk of the Course Andrew Cooper, brilliant Irish trainer Jessie Harrington, the aforementioned Mr Gosden, and Richard Kingscote chatting to our Matt. Insightful, informative, invaluable.
Enjoy ..
