Austria are the shortest price from the countries competing to win the Grand Final but when you take into account they are 50/1 to win the whole thing, you can tell the quality is not of the highest standard.
The Austrian entry is to be blunt, pretty darn nuts and the premise is just as bizarre. It is about a typewriter being possessed by the ghost of American writer Edgar Allan Poe and the two singers use it to write the song.
It is quirky and ticks a lot of the popular Eurovision narratives that takes an entry from forgettable to something people will talk about. It is the best offering that you’ll hear on Thursday but whether they’ll be able to turn that into a strong finish on Saturday is another question altogether. At 6/4 to win SF2, they are a good odds against bet.
It is our friends from Down Under that are the second choice in the betting market as the Australian entry can be backed at 9/4. This band has been around since before the turn of the Millenium, so they know how to put on a show and being the closing act, they are in prime spot to stick in the minds of the watching public. The 3/1 on offer to win on Thursday night seems fair but the 100/1 you can get them to be victorious come Saturday night is long.
After a night of no real shocks in the first semi-final, should we expect any of the outsiders to advance from Thursday to the Grand Final on Saturday night? I’m not sure we can, although Albania’s price is dropping. They were 2/1 on Wednesday evening but by the time of publication on Thursday morning, they were down at Evens to make it through. It is an extremely strong vocal that could well resonate with enough of the televoters to see a small surprise.
Iceland, Romania and San Marino are the three nations all trading at odds against to qualify and having subjected colleagues to their offerings in the office on Wednesday, the general feeling was their positions as outsiders was not unfair.
