Three days of the Chester May Festival start this Wednesday and I’ve put together my four plays for the action. Course form usually holds up here and the draw plays a big part in finding a winner. Here are my Day 1 selections. All at EW prices and at of the time of publication, a £30 e/w Lucky 15 ticket could pay out £2,271.88

Frankie Foster’s Lucky 15 Tips – Wednesday 10 May, 2023

  • Chester 1:30 – Balon D’Or – 4/1
  • Chester 2:05 – Democracy Dilemma – 5/1
  • Chester 3:45 – Commander Straker – 7/1
  • Chester 4:55 – Paws for Thought – 7/2

Chester 1:30 – Balon D’Or

Despite being drawn in 11 the Musselburgh form is too hard to ignore! The 2nd 3rd and 4th of that race all won or placed NTO. The main danger is Ziggy’s Phoenix who is quick out the stalls and has the benefit of being drawn 1 but hopefully with some luck in running the selection can run her down in the closing stages.

Chester 2:05 – Democracy Dilemma

I could get stung siding with another high draw in a sprint, but Democracy Dilemma is quick out the gates and I’m hoping Oisin Murphy can get a handy position early on. He was well backed when winning last time out at Thirsk and I think there is still more to come.

Chester 3:45 – Commander Straker

Deciding to come here on handicap debut is positive from a trainer who likes to target this meeting. The selection finished last season with a solid 3rd at Epsom and you would expect some improvement if going well fresh. David Loughnane has plenty of entries this week and I think this is one of his better chances.

Chester 4:55 – Paws for Thought

With six starts round Chester, one win, and the remaining five all in the top four Paws for thought has strong claims here. Coming here 3lb lower than when just touched off in this last year I think if reproducing that run should be hard to stop!
