Betfred Racing Ambassador Jonjo O’Neill Jr. has just one ride this weekend, at Ascot on Sunday. He talks us through his ride’s chances and also gives us a look ahead to the Grand National next weekend.

It is a rare Saturday off for me this weekend, with no feature jumps meeting, as the return of the turf flat season takes centre stage at Doncaster.

Also, with the extra week to the Grand National and the Haydock finals taking place next Saturday on Easter weekend also having an effect, it is a funny weekend with just Uttoxeter and Stratford on Saturday for the jump’s boys, although I will have a ride at Ascot on their final jumps meeting of the season on Sunday. More on that shortly, but I will find myself having a break this Saturday, although I will still keep myself busy making good use of the time.

I will go and play some squash, as I’m high on the leaderboard at my local club in Cheltenham, so will head there to try and knock a few people out of that!!

I will also watch some flat racing and keep in touch with the jumpers, as the yard does have a couple of runners in races, in which I can’t ride.

As for Ascot on Sunday, I ride Prince Escalus in the two-mile handicap chase at 3.35. It’s a £40k race so a nice pot to aim for. He is probably paying the price for his Wetherby win the last day with a 5lb rise, but he likes the trip of two miles. He does stay a little further, but the stiff nature of Ascot will suit him nicely and he will go there as long as the ground is not too soft.

I’ll be back next week when I hope to have some rides for decent prizes on Challenger Series finals’ day at Haydock and of course will be back on Merseyside the following weekend at Aintree.
