With deep ground expected at Newcastle on Wednesday, it’s mud lovers you’re looking for – and I’ve picked out a couple of interest.
Starting with Tom Lacey’s ADRIMEL in the 0-135 handicap hurdle at 3.00.
The eight-year-old has been chasing for the last couple of seasons and it’s fair to say he’s proved a seriously inconsistent type. He reverts to hurdles after a few bitterly disappointing efforts, so you are taking a chance on him bouncing back – but if he’s ever going to it’s in this discipline, on this ground.
His hurdles form was, for the most part, pretty strong, and all his best form comes on ground that was soft at best. I also think he’s best at the intermediate trip, if not even shorter.
It won’t be easy for the selection to defy top-weight here, but he’s been dropped a further 3lbs for his relatively pleasing reappearance in November last year and, providing it’s not been issues keeping him off for a further 126 days, he should come on for the run.
I doubt many of his six rivals want these testing conditions, so at the prices I think Adrimel is well worth a play.
Just over half-an-hour later, at 3.35 to be precise, is a 0-120 handicap chase over an extended 2m that’s attracted just five runners.
A tricky affair, this looks, but I’m eager to take on Gallic Geordie who returns after just eight days off a 7lb higher mark in heavy ground.
The one for me is THOR DE CERISY for Michael Scudamore.
He also has a quick turnaround to overcome, having run just 11 days ago. He was runner-up that day in another five-runner affair, also on heavy ground. That represents a fair piece of form in this company.
That was over hurdles, off a mark of 121. He’s now back over fences, and has been dropped 2lbs – so, factoring in the very useful Liam Harrison’s 3lb claim, he’s essentially 5lbs lower on Wednesday afternoon.
Providing this doesn’t come too soon, I think Thor De Cerisy is the most likely winner and I’d even go as far as to say he should be favourite.
