Paul Robinson hails England’s all time record goal scorer Harry Kane
… and hints he might take the Teddy Sheringham route, and leave Spurs for Manchester United in the summer.
But the former Tottenham and England ‘keeper also said much will depend on who Spurs appoint as their next manager.
“If it’s Pochettino I think he will stay … the managerial appointment will be key,” Robinson told Betfred TV’s Football Show.
He reckons Kane’s England goals tally – 54 and one more than Wayne Rooney after his penalty winner in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy – may never be beaten.
He believes the Three Lions’ skipper has earned the right to be in control of his own destiny, and of United’s long-term reputed interest in the 29 year old striker, Robinson said that “maybe” Kane could do something like Sheringham, who left Tottenham for the Reds – and then returned.
Robinson went on: “Tottenham have under-achieved … not winning a trophy since 2008. He has scored the goals in a team that’s under-achieved. It’s frightening to think where they would be without his goals.”
He was adamant England will make it six points from the first two qualifiers by comfortably beating Ukraine at Wembley on Sunday; with Kane again scoring. “England will win their group,” declared Robinson who explained how he retired too early from international football because he clashed with then-England boss Fabio Capello.
He described the Italian’s regime as a “dictatorship” and he didn’t want to travel the world only to be England’s number 3 keeper sitting in the stand.
Robinson praised the “fantastic result” for England in Naples but questioned the speed of Gareth Southgate bringing substitutes from the bench, when England had to dig deep in the second half.
“His in game substitutions are more reactive than proactive, but he has won another game,” added Robinson.
