Looking back at the record books does not make great reading for England supporters when it comes to games with the Italians.
Granted, there have been a couple of victories in international friendlies over the years but you do have to go all the way back to 1977 since the Three Lions last overcame the Azzurri in a competitive fixture.
For England’s last win on the road in Italy, you have to go back over a decade earlier to 1961 for a 3-2 victory for the Three Lions and even that was an international friendly.
In more recent years there has been very little to choose from between these two nations.
Italy won the last meeting in 2022 with a 1-0 victory at the San Siro in Milan but before that, the scoreline was level at the end of 90 minutes in their four previous encounters.
Gareth Southgate’s England face their toughest game in Group C up first with this trip to Naples and to come away with a draw would be a solid start for the English as they look to get over from the disappointment of their 2022 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.
This fixture against Italy has had those four draws in the last five meetings (after 90 minutes) and it would be little surprise to see another stalemate at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Thursday night at 11/5 with Betfred.
