One of the world’s biggest boxing superstars Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez returns home on Cinco de Mayo weekend, with a defence of his Undisputed super middleweight titles against the Englishman John Ryder. We’ve taken an early look at the betting odds.

Canelo vs Ryder Odds

Canelo vs Ryder! It’s the one we all wanted…

Ok, so it’s not the massive comeback fight for Saul Alvarez we were all wanting after his enforced absence due to injury, following his completed trilogy with GGG in September.

However, it’s a first fight for Canelo in his homeland for 11 and a half years and make no mistake, this will be a massive occasion!

The Akron Stadium is the home of Mexican football side C.D. Guadalajara and holds 48,000, who will all be baying for the Brit’s blood.

John Ryder may well be an underwhelming opponent but he IS the mandatory challenger and with Canelo ‘Undisputed’, he does need to start defending some of those belts.

The 34-year-old southpaw may have had an up and down career but he is enjoying an Indian summer towards the end of his career, beating both Daniel Jacobs and Zach Parker, to force himself into this position.

Many had the ‘Gorilla’ beating Callum Smith in their match up back in 2019 and he will present a few new challenges for Canelo.

Alvarez hasn’t face that many southpaws and last fought a lefty when he took out Billy Joe Saunders back in 2021.

The emotions of the occasion and the fact he will be fighting on home soil, mean this is a fight that the 32-year-old Guadalajar native will be bang up for.

What’s been said?

Canelo:

“I feel really happy to be coming back in May because following my surgery, I was unsure of when I’d be coming back.

Returning to the ring and coming back to fight in Jalisco, where I’m from, makes me especially happy.

And in John Ryder, I’m facing a very competitive fighter.”

Ryder:

“He’s got a granite chin and power in both hands. He’s always got the equalizer. Like I said, he’s aging. I don’t know how that’s affected him, and injuries play into it.

I just feel that going in there and putting my best foot forward, and giving a terrific account of myself and come away with the marbles.

“We’ve got just over ten weeks now. It’s great notice for a fight, I’ve had this fight in mind for three years. I’ve obviously been looking at this fight.

Yeah, give me three good weeks, and I’ll be in full swing in the camp, and I’ll be raring to go on May 6th.”
