Racing on Monday in the UK and Ireland comes from Navan, Southwell and Taunton. There are seven-race jump cards from each of those meetings.
Our fancies include a Grand National contender who can enhance his claims for Aintree with a big performance in a Grade Two contest at Navan this afternoon.
Selections
- Carlisle 14:25 – Any Second Now @ Evs
- Southwell 14:35 – Coastguard Station @ 6/4
- Southwell 17:05 – My Ticketyboo @ 2/1
Tip 1
ANY SECOND NOW (Evs) has finished in the top three placings in the last two renewals of the Grand National. He will travel to Aintree with an excellent chance of landing the first prize this year, despite him being given top weight by the handicapper.
The 11-year-old will have been trained to peak at the back end of the season, with the Grand National in mind with trainer Ted Walsh. As in his previous campaigns, he has shown very little in the Autumn period. This will be his last appearance before he makes that trip across the Irish Sea, and you can expect to see a big performance.
On his final start before the Grand National in 2021, the Irish horse won this race by 10 lengths. In 2022, he landed the Grade Three Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse. He is a long way clear of any of his rivals in this field, so his class should show in this 2m4½f contest.
Tip 2
Since switching to fences, COASTGUARD STATION (6/4) has shown a big improvement in form, and there is likely to be much more to come from Henry Oliver’s gelding on just his third outing as a chaser.
The seven-year-old prevailed on his chase debut at Doncaster back in November. He scored by seven lengths in that extended 2m contest, going from last to first place in the closing stages of the race. He then finished a respectable second place over that same C&D, with the winner going to score again on his next appearance.
The unexposed chaser features on the Betfred Betfinder as one of the most Napped selections this afternoon. He has gone up just 1lb in the ratings for his latest performance, and he is down in class here, which should make things easier for him.
Tip 3
MY TICKETYBOO (2/1) comes into this finale at Southwell (3m½f) looking to complete a hat-trick of wins. He was successful in back-to-back races at Fontwell earlier this year. On his latest appearance, he defied a 6lb rise in the ratings.
The handicapper has only put Chris Gordon’s runner up 1lb for his victory last month. This time around his jockey Freddie Gordon can claim 7lb off his back, so he is effectively better off at the weights.
With so many of these runners being out of form, on paper this looks like a battle between the hat-trick-seeker and Walk In The Storm. The latter still needs to break his maiden over hurdles, so it is My Ticketyboo who is preferred to keep his winning stretch going.
