Lets do that bit where we acknowledge some of the legends that have lifted this great prize. It’s nearly 100 years old – but these names will never grow stale. Golden Miller. Arkle. Cottage Rake. Best Mate. Kauto Star. You’ll all have your favourite.
It’s nearly time to crown the 2023 champion.
The presence of short-priced favourite Galopin Des Champs makes for a fantastic each-way bonanza here. The jolly is around the 15/8 mark, then it’s 13/2 and bigger the rest. Four places each-way too – so that’s definitely a great angle into the race.
The Mullins/Townend conveyance won the Martin Pipe two years ago and would have won last year’s Turners by daylight had he not tipped up at the last. He’s a serious animal, and is two-from-two in Grade 1’s this term so far. Rated 173. Huge chance.
A Plus Tard won this impressively last year but has run only once since, pulling up in Haydock’s Betfair Chase. That dismal effort was a mystery, but has Henry De Bromhead got him back? Has 7lbs and more in hand on official ratings, but it’s hard not to have some misgivings.
Bravemansgame won a dramatic King George on Boxing Day, and is an admirable stayer. This would be his stiffest test to date of course – how trainer Paul Nicholls would love to grab another Gold Cup.
Noble Yeats is a gifted 8-yr-old, and already has a Grand National to his name for the Waley-Cohens. He’ll need every yard of this trip, but on the likely soft ground stamina will more than play its part.
Ahoy Senor is interesting. Beat Noble Yeats and others here in January over slightly shorter, but throws in the occasional inexplicably modest effort. If he’s on a going day, who knows. Certainly got bags of ability.
This is a belter, as you’d hope it might be – and an open one at that. I’m taking a chance that stamina will win the day, and whatever you fancy, the very best of luck.
