Former road digger Barrie Mason has a whole new future after a sensational win at Betfred.
For over 40 years, Barrie has been digging up the roads and fitting pipes – and now he’s hit the jackpot, picking up an incredible £28,855 from just a 50p each-way accumulator.
Remarkably, NONE of the five horses he picked at Fontwell on Monday actually won.
At the prices quoted when he put his wager on at the Betfred shop in Ribbleton, Preston, 67-year-old Barrie would have won £3,555 – but thanks to Betfred’s Best Odds Guaranteed promotion his winnings were boosted by an amazing £25,166.
He said: “My daily routine is to wake up, make a brew, check the news and then look at the horse racing on my phone.
“I know it’s strange, but I’ve started going for double-barrelled names – and I follow a female jockey called Joanne Mason because we share the same surname.
“I feel absolutely brilliant after this win, which is the best I’ve ever had in 30 years as a Betfred punter. It’s an amazing amount of money that has been boosted so much.”
Divorced father-of-one Barrie, who used to serve in the army, has five brothers, two sisters, four grandchildren and one great grandson – and everyone will be getting something.
“I have a large family, and I’ll be treating everyone,” he went on.
“A mate of mine is going on holiday with his wife to Tenerife, so I’m going to ask if I can go along with them next month.
“I’m a Manchester United supporter, although the last time I went to Old Trafford George Best was still playing!
“I’ve got another friend who’s a season ticket holder at United, so I’m going to see if I can get a ticket to Wembley for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle and go with him.”
The five horses Barrie picked were Oscarsman, who came fourth in the 13.20 at Fontwell, Dindin who was second in the 13.55 and Privatearing who was runner-up in the 14.30 – while both Belgarum and Tamaris came third in the 15.30 and 16.30 respectively.
He added: “I didn’t know I’d won anything like this amount until I went into the Betfred shop the morning after.
“I knew Privatearing had gone off at 250/1 from 100/1, and Belgarum at 125/1 from 50/1, so I thought I’d possibly get something, but it’s unbelievable that I’ve won as much as £28,855.”
