In news that should come as no surprise to any fan of the Premier League, Leeds and Jesse Marsch parted ways on Monday and the search is on to see who will get the chance to try and keep the Yorkshire giant in the top flight…
West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has taken to life in the Championship like a duck to water (other cliches are available) but his performances at the helm of the Baggies has been mightily impressive so far. The 39 year-old only took the job late in the autumn and to jump ship so quickly would certainly ruffle a few feathers. He was the U23 manager at Elland Road and was promoted to a first-team coach by former boss Marcelo Bielsa. Bringing in a manager who worked under the popular former manager would go down well with Leeds but you know who would also go down well with Leeds fans? Marcelo Bielsa himself…
Corberan has opened as the 11/8 favourite for the job but Bielsa is 7/1 and the third choice in the opening odds for Betfred to make a dramatic return to the club. The Argentine had talks with Everton but decided against taking the Goodison Park job and there would be a groundswell of support for him to make a triumphant return to the club who fired him a year ago. Could it happen? The romantic in me says yes and they have a good enough squad for him to come in and keep them up.
Between the two of them we find Mauricio Pochettino. At 11/2 he feels like a longshot as Leeds are surely not the right club for him to return to the English game. Plenty of Spurs fans will be desperate for him to keep sitting it out should Antonio Conte decide enough is enough at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Outside of these three we start to see some of the usual suspects. Former Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is 9/1 but he would not be a popular appointment. If Saints fans were delighted to see him move on then I’m not sure Leeds ones would be happy to see him walk in through the door.
The likes of Rafa Benitez and Steven Gerrard are available to back at 25/1 with Frank Lampard at 33/1. I’m not sure any of them are viable candidates although the former Liverpool, Newcastle and Everton boss would garner some support among the Elland Road faithful.
It seems like Corberan or Bielsa would make the most sense. Leeds had a tremendous run under their former manager and played the type of football that ensured they were in many games. Personally speaking, I think bringing their former manager back would be fantastic for the league and I think he would give them the best opportunity to stay up. Whether the board agree though is probably another matter altogether.
