Last week I jumped at the chance to back PEC Zwolle at odds against on the road. The runaway leaders at the top of the Eerste Divisie have been in flat-out dominating form in recent weeks with only a defeat on the road at Feyenoord in the cup stopping them from having a 100% record in competitive games since last October.
Sadly we can’t back them at such a good price to win again but we can get 7/5 for them to come through with a one-goal handicap. That still intrigues as they are facing Jong Ajax, which even those who aren’t exactly following the Dutch Second Division can probably guess is made up of young Ajax players.
Jong Ajax haven’t beaten anyone since November 4 when they went on the road and took down Dordrecht 3-4 in a thriller. They would score four again the next time out in a 4-4 draw but since then, the only time they’ve scored more than once was against Jong PSV. What they have been successful at is keeping games close with the only defeat by two or more since September coming in a 3-0 defeat at De Graafschap when they were down to ten-men in the first half.
PEC Zwolle though are the class of the Eerste Divisie as they sit six points clear of second-placed Heracles, a team they defeated 0-3 on the road in January. Dick Schreuder’s side have scored 55 times in 22 games and look set for promotion back to the top flight just a year after they were relegated.
They are fast becoming one of my go to teams for this column having already provided me with two winners. I like their chances of making it a third.
