After securing their place in the Carabao Cup final during the week, Newcastle will turn their attention back to the Premier League when they welcome West Ham to St James’ Park on Saturday evening.

The Magpies are heading into the weekend sitting third in the standings and unbeaten in the Premier League since August, while the Hammers are just a point and two places above the relegation zone, although they will arrive on Tyneside having won three of their previous four matches across all competitions.

Match Result – Newcastle

Newcastle have lost just one of their 20 top-flight matches to date this term and even that sole defeat at Liverpool in August came as a result of a 98th-minute goal from Reds youngster Fabio Carvalho.

Liverpool are also the last team to beat Newcastle at St James’ Park, claiming a 1-0 success in April, with the Magpies unbeaten in their 15 matches on home soil across all competitions since.

That impressive home record is one Newcastle will expect to extend this weekend, as they have only lost one of their last six matches, home or away, against West Ham.

The Hammers have won just once in 10 league matches on the road this season and have collected a mere two points on their travels since August – not the kind of record that will fill supporters with confidence ahead of their long trip to the north east.

Under 2.5 goals

There is no doubting that Newcastle have built much of their success this season on a strong defence, as they have conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League to date this term, letting in just 11 in 20 matches and keeping clean-sheets in each of their last six top-flight games.

However, the Magpies have not found scoring goals so easy over recent weeks, netting just once across their last four league fixtures, although that was an important goal – Alexander Isak’s 89th-minute winner against Fulham.

West Ham are averaging less than a goal-a-game in the Premier League this season and have drawn a blank in three of their last five top-flight fixtures on the road – Saturday’s match is unlikely to be a goalfest.

Joelinton to be carded

Joelinton has been a near ever present for Newcastle this season and the hard-working Brazilian is no stranger to the wrath of referees, as in 17 league starts to date he has been booked seven times, including against Crystal Palace in his last top-flight appearance.

No player has been cautioned more times than Joelinton in the Premier League this term and since moving to England from Hoffenheim ahead of the 2019-20 season, the 26-year-old has received more yellow cards in the league (25) than he has scored goals (12).

With compatriot Bruno Guimaraes suspended for Saturday’s game after his sending off against Southampton during the week, Joelinton could be required to play in a deeper central-midfield role, which could further increase his chances of being carded.
