PEC Zwolle won yet again to give us a Monday winner, which is a nice start to the week. It is a trip down to League 2 for Tuesday and I’m staying relatively local as our Football Bet of the Day at Evens or Longer comes from League 2 as Salford City welcome in Walsall to the Peninsula Stadium…
Football Bet of the Day – Tuesday 31 January, 2023
- Back Salford City to win at 13/10
Neil Wood’s side made the long trip back from Sussex with no points having been beaten 3-2 by relegation-threatened Crawley Town. It was a disappointing result from a game the visitors would have expected to take something from but whenever you go on the road against a side with a new manager, it makes the task a whole lot more tricky.
They return home on Tuesday knowing that automatic promotion out of League 2 is starting to look a much taller task and the time is now if they are going to go on a run. They haven’t made their home ground a fortress and have only taken five wins in front of their own fans in the league so far this campaign. That isn’t a great return but they haven’t been defeated at the Peninsula Stadium since November.
As for Walsall, they have been in really decent nick recently and haven’t lost in their previous five games away from the Bescot Stadium. They gave Premier League Leicester all they could handle in the FA Cup on Saturday lunchtime and if it wasn’t for a very fortuitous deflected effort, they could easily be planning a trip to the King Power for a fourth round replay.
So the stats don’t seem to suggest that a home win is on the cards so why have I picked it you may ask? I’m banking on a bit of a letdown from the visitors coming off a game with Leicester that would have surely taken plenty out of the players both physically and emotionally. To turn around three days later and get back into league action and be at near 100% is a tall ask.
The Saddlers are still on the fringes of the play-off race despite being in the bottom half of the division but they only had the ball for 25% of the game against Leicester with the Premier League side notching up more than 400 extra passes than the home side. That is going to be very taxing and a leggy Walsall gives Salford a great chance to take the three points.
