Thursday’s seven-race card at Wetherby is unlikely to fall foul of the recent bad weather and we have three tips for the action from the Yorkshire venue.

The racing is due to get going at 12:50 and they run until 16:15, with our selections featuring in the opener, the later seven-strong Class 3 Handicap Chase, which is set to go off at 14:35, and a Mares-only Handicap Chase scheduled for 15:40.

Selections

  • 12:50 – Good Work @ 9/4
  • 14:35 – No Risk Des Flos @ 6/1
  • 15:40 – Midnight Mary @ 3/1

12:50 – Good Work @ 9/4

Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero’s GOOD WORK (9/4) is the highest-rated horse in the 11-strong field for the first race, and if he can replicate the sort of form that saw him finish second in a handicap chase at Chepstow earlier this month then he looks the one to beat.

That runners-up outing was on soft ground – which is also likely to be the case at Wetherby on Thursday – so conditions should suit, and it may well be third time lucky for Good Work, who also turned in a spirited second-place finish at Uttoxeter in November.

14:35 – No Risk Des Flos @ 6/1

A four-time winner over hurdles, and a three-time victor at Wetherby over the last 12 months, NO RISK DES FLOS (6/1) stands out in this Handicap.

Olly Murphy’s charge won a similar race to this here last February before struggling somewhat in subsequent outings at Chepstow and Perth.

To enhance his claims on Thursday further, a return to the familiar Wetherby surroundings resulted in another win for him in November, although a follow-up run here just after Christmas may have to be disregarded as that resulted in a disappointing sixth-place finish out of nine.

This contest should be more to his liking, however, and, even though there are obvious dangers like Iron Bridge (2/1) and Ubetya (15/2) lurking, Murphy’s eight-year-old can come out on top again at a venue where he seems to thrive.

15:40 – Midnight Mary @ 3/1

Bryony Frost saddles MIDNIGHT MARY (3/1) in the 15:40, in what looks like a competitive penultimate heat at Wetherby.

She won three times at around 3m over hurdles last season for Stuart Edmunds and maintained similar impressive form when under the guidance of Lucy Wadham for the first time when second at Plumpton last month – interestingly with cheekpieces attached.

Others to note include Lincoln Lyn (9/4) and Stanley Stanley (11/2) in this six-strong Mares Handicap Chase.
