Tuesday’s action at the Australian Open includes Novak Djokovic’s return to Melbourne, when the 4/5 outright favourite faces Roberto Carballes Baena, while British stars Dan Evans and Andy Murray are also in action.
We have picked out a four-fold acca for Tuesday from Down Under, which works out at just over EVENS.
Australian Open Tuesday Tips
- Dan Evans to beat Facundo Bagnis @ 1/10
- Matteo Berrettini to beat Andy Murray @ 2/7
- Tommy Paul to beat Jan-Lennard Struff @ 2/5
- Novak Djokovic to beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets @ 1/6
Dan Evans to beat Facundo Bagnis @ 1/10
Evans is due to get his tournament under way at around midnight when he takes on Argentine Facundo Bagnis. The Briton, who is ranked 30th in the world, is the 25th seed for Melbourne and should have few problems getting past his first opponent.
Bagnis, who has never progressed past the first round in Australia, is ranked 91st in the world and lost to Evans in straight sets in their only previous meeting, coincidentally in the first round here five years ago.
Matteo Berrettini to beat Andy Murray @ 2/7
While it should be good news for Evans, his fellow Brit Murray may be facing an early exit. He takes on 13th seed Berrettini in a tough first-round clash for the Scot.
The Italian, who is ranked 14 in the world, 52 places higher than Murray, has won their last three meetings, including at last year’s US Open and importantly is nine years Murray’s junior. He made the semis here 12 months ago and is expected to progress far again this time around.
Tommy Paul to beat Jan-Lennard Struff @ 2/5
American Tommy Paul should have a fairly comfortable ride against German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff in his first-round tie.
Paul is up to 35 in the world and has the ability to outclass Struff, who is 35 years old now and who has slipped to 167 in the rankings.
These two have met twice before and Paul won both matches in straight sets, coming out on top on clay in Italy in 2021, before also prevailing in an ATP Masters 1000 Paris tie the same year.
Novak Djokovic to beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets @ 1/6
Finally, adding Djokovic to win in straight sets to the acca seems to make sense, even if the Serb star is as short as 1/6 to progress without dropping a set.
There is a clear gulf in class between the nine-time Australian Open champion and his first-round opponent Carballes Baena and this should be as straightforward as it gets for the 35-year-old, who is back at Melbourne after controversially being excluded from last year’s event.
Spaniard Carballes Baena has only faced Djokovic once before and that predictably ended in a straight sets defeat at the US Open in 2019. This clash, which is due to start around 09:30 UK time on Tuesday, should follow a similar pattern.
