What an amazing few weeks of darts we have witnessed. It all comes to a head at Alexandra Palace on Tuesday evening with the final of the PDC World Darts Championships. As we have done on a daily basis throughout the tournament, here are our best bets, for what should be a stunning final.
PDC World Darts Final Tips
- Michael van Gerwyn -2.5 sets – 5/6
- Michael van Gerwyn to win and Michael Smith most 180’s – 10/11
- Michael van Gerwyn to win 7-4 – 11/2
Michael van Gerwyn -2.5 sets – 5/6
It’s the pre tournament final that the fans would have wanted and one that I predicted in my pre – Tournament Preview.
Dutch wizard Michael van Gerwyn (3/10) takes on Englishman Michael Smith (12/5), in a match that will not only give us our new World Champion, it will also install our new world #1.
‘Bully Boy’ saw off a spirited challenge by the ‘German Giant’ Gabriel Clemens in the semi-final and the 6-2 score line was unfair on the big German, who was a big threat throughout.
32-year-old Smith seems to be peaking at the right time though, lifting his average from 91.63 against Stephen Bunting in the quarters to 101.85 against Clemens.
He will need to raise that again though several levels to live with the Dutchman, who has been on a different stratosphere at Ally Pally over the last few weeks.
‘MVG’ continues to astound, dispatching a hapless Dimitri Van den Bergh 6-0 in the semi, with a ridiculous 108.28 average.
This means the 33-year-old has registered five consecutive ton+ averages for the tournament, dropping just three of 25 sets played.
Smith will give van Gerwyn some early problems, especially if his scoring continues to improve but I just can’t see anything other than a fairly comfortable MVG win and a fourth world title.
Michael van Gerwyn to win and Michael Smith most 180’s – 10/11
One area that Smith improved in his semi final, was his maximum hitting. The St Helens man hit a whopping 19 180’s in just eight sets and now has 44 for the tournament.
Smith broke the calendar record for 180’s last season, so once he gets on it, he is pretty much unstoppable.
MVG hasn’t been as prolific this week with 32 max’s and six in his rout of Van den Bergh.
Michael van Gerwyn to win 7-4 – 11/2
As a bit of a longer shot, we will be having a bit of loose change on MVG to win 7-4.
In his three previous World Championship wins, van Gerwyn has won 7-4, 7-3 and 7-3 (against Smith). We think Smith may push him a touch further tonight.
