Ross Smith to beat Dirk van Duijvenbode @ 11/10
This one should be an absolute cracker between two players who are on the rise in the sport.
Dirk Van Duijvenbode is a crowd favourite due to his exuberant walk-on and aggressive style of play which leads to massive scores – no player on the planet hits more 180s than the Dutchman.
The next step for the “Titan” is to win a biggie on TV with his only final appearance in a ranked major coming just over two years ago, when losing out to Gerwyn Price in the Grand Prix final.
He comes up against the more measured Ross Smith in a repeat of last year’s third-round clash, in which the Dutchman overturned Smith’s three-set lead to win.
However, “Smudger” is undoubtedly a better and more resilient player and celebrated a debut major win at the European Championship this year.
Van Duijvenbode has turned out some fairly ordinary performances in the latter stages of TV events this year and Smith’s winning know-how may give him the edge.
Rob Cross to beat Mervyn King 4-1 @ 11/4
2018 world champion Rob Cross had to weather a storm from his practice partner Scott Williams in round two and has been rewarded with a match against Mervyn King.
“Voltage” has had a good year in 2022, bouncing up to number six in the rankings with a run to the Player Championship Finals his best TV result.
He averaged a shade under a ton in beating Williams and now faces King, who got the better of US thrower Danny Baggish.
King has had a poor year for his usually consistent standards and has barely figured on TV, missing the Matchplay, Grand Prix, Grand Slam, and Euros.
Although he showed plenty of fight to halt a Baggish comeback, King will find Cross tough and the man from Brighton should have too much.
Dave Chisnall to beat Stephen Bunting 4-3 @ 4/1
The two St Helens throwers go at it in one of the hardest-to-call third-round ties as Dave Chisnall faces Stephen Bunting in a match between the 12th and 21st seeds.
Chisnall played well in beating form man Andrew Gilding 3-1 in round two, while the “Bullet” got the better of American ace Leonard Gates 3-1, averaging 91 despite a whole raft of missed doubles.
Both players are defending semi-final cheques from two years ago and could do with a win to avoid dropping down the rankings.
Chisnall is one of the biggest scorers in the game and reached the Masters final this year, while Bunting has been more consistent without being outstanding on the big stage.
The extra firepower from Chisnall might be enough to see him scrape through against his old mate.
