Who’s the favourite?
Pound for pound number one Crawford is a huge 1/20 odds-on favourite for this one. European Champion Avanesyan is a live 8/1 outsider, with the draw available at 25/1.
What’s been said?
Crawford:
“I’m excited about this opportunity. David Avanesyan is a very tough task. He’s knocked out his last six opponents and this guy is dangerous. Once I’m successful against Avanesyan, my plan is still the same – whoop Errol Spence’s a**.
Me and Errol, if that fight happens, it will happen next year. I just don’t like the fact that a lot of people are blaming me for trying to make the fight.
I just blame the business of boxing. I don’t blame myself for [even] one portion of the fight not being made. … I felt like I agreed to everything that I needed to agree to.
I feel like I’ve done everything I’m supposed to do as an independent fighter to get that fight made. But there’s only so much I can do.”
Avanesyan:
“I’m not only here to win this fight decisively but to shock the world. Come Sunday morning, the news will spread that I raised the belt and shocked the world.”
Fight to go the distance – Yes – 5/1
This prediction will earn me some pelters on social media and the hardcore boxing forums but I’ve just got an itch that I need to scratch. David Avanesyan has been a favourite of mine for some time and will be a live threat to any fighter – even arguably the world’s best.
The 34-year-old Newark resident has long been a fixture on UK screens, memorably knocking out Kerman Lejarraga (twice), Josh Kelly, Liam Taylor and Oskari Metz. He has certainly earnt a shot at the big time and who can blame him for taking this fight?
Terance Crawford had spoken all week about how he has only been focusing on the European Champion but one couldn’t blame him for having his mind elsewhere, when every question in interviews has been about the non-fight with Errol Spence.
There has been a constant back and forth between Crawford’s team and Spence/ Al Haymon accusing each other of not wanting the fight/making unreasonable demands and that has to be playing on the Nebraskan’s state of mind.
Both these men carry extreme power and I think it could be an extremely cagey affair in the early rounds with neither willing to take chances. Avanesyan has won his last seven fights by KO and Crawford has seen his last nine fights end early.
The Russian is very durable and has only been stopped once, against former Crawford opponent Egidijus Kavaliauskas. I think there’s a good chance he can see the final bell and at 5/1 I’m willing to take the chance.
Terence Crawford to win on points – 7/1
That being said, Crawford is a superb technician and simply doesn’t know how to lose fights. I think he will be hurt at some point in this fight but will do enough to secure a comfortable decision in front of his own crowd.
Enjoy the fight!
