Morocco appear well placed to make it through to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup, but they may not have things all their own way when they take on already-eliminated Canada in their final match in Group E on Thursday.

The Atlas Lions have caught the eye in Qatar, following up a draw with Croatia in their opening fixture with an impressive 2-0 victory over the side currently ranked second in the world, Belgium.

Those results mean Walid Regragui’s side will qualify for the knockout stages if they avoid defeat against Canada at the Al Thumama Stadium, although they could still sneak through even if they lose, but that will depend on the result of the other match in the group between Croatia and Belgium.

Canada already know they will be packing their bags after this game following defeats to Belgium and Croatia, but they have earned plenty of plaudits for their efforts and perhaps deserved more from their opening fixture against the Red Devils.

John Herdman’s side will be keen to end their tournament on a high, which could prove bad news for a Morocco team that may be feeling the pressure of trying to secure a place in the last 16 of the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

Team News

After being introduced as a substitute in Canada’s opening two matches, Ismael Kone could come into the XI for this game, with captain Atiba Hutchinson expected to drop to the bench as, at 39, he is unlikely to be able to start three matches in eight days.

Herdman has no other fitness concerns, but after being dropped to the bench against Croatia, Reading forward Junior Hoilett will hope to return to the line-up.

Morocco named the same side that started against Croatia for the Belgium win only for goalkeeper Yassine Bounou to pull out of the match minutes before kick-off and after the national anthems had been sung.

Munir Mohamedi was the last-minute replacement for the Sevilla stopper and kept a clean-sheet, but he is likely to make way if Bounou is fit enough to return.

Canada to win @ 13/5

Canada deserved at least a point from their opening game against Belgium and although they ended up being comprehensively beaten by Croatia, they did lead in that game and showed plenty of spirit.

The goal against Croatia was also Canada’s first at the World Cup finals and they will now be determined to end their time in Qatar on a high by picking up their first-ever points at the tournament against Morocco.

This is a difficult game for Morocco to approach, as they could go for the victory or play for the point that would also take them through to the knockout stages.

Ecuador and Iran were in similar positions to the Atlas Lions in their final group games and ended up losing, a similar fate could now face the team from North Africa.

#PickYourPunt – Alphonso Davies to score anytime and Sofyan Amrabat to be carded @ 14/1

There is no doubting who Canada’s talisman is, with Alphonso Davies making up for missing a penalty against Belgium by scoring Les Rouges’ first-ever World Cup goal in the defeat to Croatia.

The 22-year-old usually plays at left-back for his club Bayern Munich, but he enjoys a more advanced role at international level, which has allowed him to showcase his goalscoring abilities, as he had netted 13 goals in 36 appearances for Canada.

Davies is available to score anytime at 11/4 but combining that with Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat to be carded using Betfred’s #PickYourPunt could offer more value at 14s.

Fiorentina star Amrabat is certainly a leading contender to be carded, as he has already been booked once at this tournament against Croatia, while he has been cautioned seven times for his club in Serie A this season, the most of any player in Italy’s top flight.
