A customer who has only been with Betfred since the beginning of the World Cup has won £2,500 by successfully predicting one of the biggest shock results in the competition’s history.
Ma Yuankui, a 40-year-old father-of-two who lives in Manchester, bet £50 at 50/1 that Germany would be winning at half-time, but Japan would go on to win the game.
After that very prediction came true, he went off celebrating with pals – and his £2,500 winnings – within an hour of the final whistle.
Mr Yunakui, who has a flat in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, said: “I always go for the Asian teams, and I really did think Japan could beat Germany… and I was right.
“I fancied Saudi Arabia yesterday too, but didn’t put anything on that.
“I’ve only been with Betfred since the World Cup started, and I’ve already won on England and France beating Iran and Australia, but didn’t pick up anything in the matches involving Poland and Denmark.
“To win £2,500 is just fantastic. I haven’t told my wife yet, who lives in Canada while I’m working as a managing director here in England. She’ll be very pleased, but I might have to explain to her about football!”
Betfred boss Fred Done said: “What a brilliant start to the competition for Ma. He’s one of only a handful of customers who opted for big outsiders Japan to triumph over one of the most-fancied teams from Europe.
“To pick up so much from a £50 wager is brilliant. Have a drink on me, you certainly deserve it.”
