When The Sun broke the story early on Tuesday, that former Health Secretary Matt Hancock was set to appear in the latest series of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! My first thought was the date of 1 November was about six months out. Yet the story was no April Fool. So what are the odds he’ll shock the betting markets and actually be the King of the Jungle…?
Well, Betfred have updated their odds accordingly and the current MP for West Suffolk is a 20/1 shot. That is not the longest odds available with Scarlett Douglas, Sue Cleaver and Charlene White all at bigger prices at the time of writing.
This is one of the most interesting bookings that the show has been able to get for many a year. For those who don’t remember, Hancock was the MP in charge of the government’s Covid-19 response but who had to resign in June of 2021 having been caught breaking social distancing rules whilst having an affair with one of his colleagues, Gina Colangelo. He would subsequently leave his wife and return to the backbenches. Any hope of a return to the cabinet were dashed when Rishi Sunak bypassed him when he put together his top team last week.
The 44 year-old has already had the whip suspended by the Conservative Party following the news as he’s set to be on the show whilst parliament is sitting. That means his constituents will be without representation in the House of Commons for the duration of his stay.
No doubt ITV executives will be hoping that he’ll be ready and willing to talk openly about what happened behind the scenes in Downing Street during the pandemic. He could be absolute gold and with his stock among the general public being low, he has every chance of staying in the jungle for a while and face many a Bush Tucker Trial.
