Jordan Henderson has been added to the England squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The Liverpool midfielder was not initially named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Friday’s clash in Milan against the European champions or the Wembley showdown with Germany on Monday but he has been drafted in after Manchester City man Kalvin Phillips was forced to pull out over the weekend with a shoulder injury.

Henderson has missed Liverpool’s last three matches after suffering a hamstring injury in the Reds’ 2-1 win against Newcastle United at the end of August but has now returned to training and joins up with his international team-mates at St George’s Park.

England are 6/4 to beat Italy at the San Siro, Italy are 15/8 to win and the draw is 21/10.

Phillips’ injury setback means his frustrating to start to life at City continues. The former Leeds United star has struggled for regular action since his move to the Etihad in the summer and boss Pep Guardiola admitted he doesn’t know how long the 26-year-old will be out for, hinting he may even require surgery in order to be ready for the World Cup, which begins on November 20.

“I don’t know (how long he will be out) – I’m not a doctor – but in a good way he can arrive for the World Cup,” Guardiola said.

“The doctor said the only solution right now is to do what he has to do. Now it will be not long but a little bit longer.”

He added on the City website: “Every time it’s out (the shoulder), it’s out and doctors (say that) when you have three or four times (where) it’s out (with) the shoulder, the only solution is to have surgery.”

England are 7/1 to win the World Cup in Qatar this winter.
