There will be more than just the US Open title on the line when Carlos Alcaraz takes on Casper Ruud in the Flushing Meadows final as the winner will also become the new world number one (Ruud 7/4, Alcaraz 4/9 – Match Betting).

Saturday Highlights

Iga Swiatek v Ons Jabeur

Alcaraz booked his place in his first Grand Slam final after coming through yet another epic five-set contest, his third in a row, this time ending US hopes with a 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 6-1 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 victory over Frances Tiafoe in their last-four clash.

If Alcaraz, 19, was to triumph in Sunday’s final he would become the youngest man to win a Grand Slam since his compatriot, Rafael Nadal, claimed his first French Open title in 2005.

Standing in the Spanish teenager’s way is fifth seed Ruud, who made it through to his second Grand Slam final of the year by beating Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 5-7 6-2 in the semi-finals.

Eight of the Norwegian’s nine tour titles have come on clay with Ruud demonstrating his talent on the slower surface earlier this year by reaching the final of the French Open, but he had shown improved form on the hard courts in both Miami and Montreal en route to New York.

However, his defeat in the final at the ATP Masters 1000 Miami came at the hands of Alcarez, losing 7-5 6-4, while he also lost their first meeting on clay last year (6-2 6-4).

Of course, Saturday’s action will see Ons Jabeur continue her history bid as she takes on Iga Swiatek in the women’s finial, with the action set to get underway at 9pm (Swiatek 8/15, Jabeur 6/4 – Match Betting).

Jabeur lost the Wimbledon final to Elena Rybakina in July but gets another chance to become the first woman from Africa to win a major singles title after powering past in-form Frenchwoman Caroline Garcie 6-1 6-3 in Thursday’s semi-final.

World number one Swiatek of course won the French Open title for the second time in her career earlier this year, and is closing in on a second Grand Slam of 2022 after beating Aryna Sabalenka 3-6 6-1 6-4 in the last four.
