Rafael Nadal is through to the fourth round of the US Open after a comfortable straight-sets win over Richard Gasquet, while Cameron Norrie has kept the British hopes alive.
Sunday’s Highlights
Daniil Medvedev v Nick Kyrgios
Matteo Berrettini v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Ons Jabeur v Veronika Kudermetova
Nadal, looking for his fifth win at Flushing Meadows, easily disposed of Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 to continue his bid to win a third Grand Slam in the same calendar year.
The Spaniard, now 11/4 to win the tournament, will face Frances Tiafoe next as he seeks to make the quarter finals. Nadal has a 2-0 record over his opponent in the head-to-head stats.
Meanwhile, British number one Norrie has also made round four despite his opponent, Holger Rune, claiming he was taking too long during service games.
Norrie won 7-5 6-4 6-1 to set up a clash with ninth seed Andrey Rublev, with the 27-year-old available at 8/13 to beat his Russian opponent.
There was disappointment though for Dan Evans though, who lost a four-set battle to Marin Cilic to crash out. Cilic will now face Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in round four.
Alcaraz, who beat American Jenson Brooksby, has won both of this year’s meetings with Cilic and is now 4/1 to win the men’s title.
In the women’s draw, Petra Kvitova produced the display of the day on Saturday – surviving two match points before eventually beating Garbine Muguruza.
The 32-year-old has never made it past the quarter finals in New York and is now 20/1 in the Outright betting, as she prepares to face Jessica Pegula in the fourth round.
World number one Iga Swiatek is still the 9/4 favourite, despite not being at her best in Saturday’s win over Lauren Davis of the USA.
Meanwhile, the Arthur Ashe Stadium should be packed for Sunday’s standout matches, including the clash between Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios.
Defending champion Medvedev is 8/15 to progress to the quarter finals, but Kyrgios has a 2-1 advantage in the head-to-head standings and the Wimbledon runner-up is 6/4 to defeat his opponent again.
Two seeded players meet in the women’s singles on the same court, as fifth seed Ons Jabeur comes up against 18th seed against Veronika Kudermetova (Match betting – Jabeur 4/5, Kudermetova Evens).
