Trainer Owen Burrows has confirmed Minzaal (10/1 – To win Sprint Cup Stakes) will race in next month’s Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock as his search for a Group One Flat victory goes on.

The four-year-old has previously been a winner in Group Two and Three races and has had several near misses for more prestigious honours.

He finished third in the Middle Park Stakes and British Champions Stakes at Newmarket and Ascot respectively in what were very encouraging runs.

Then, after finishing well down the order in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, he came within a whisker of a Group One win on the continent at Deauville.

However, the son of Mehmas was three-quarters-of-a-length adrift of eventual winner Highfield Princess, meaning the wait goes on.

His next planned run comes back on home soil as he prepares to make the trip to Merseyside for the Sprint Cup Stakes and Burrows is confident he will be ready to battle for victory in the six furlong race.

“He’s been knocking on the doors in these Group Ones for a few years now – he’s Group One placed at two, three, and four. It would just be lovely if he could get his head in front in one,” said the Lambourn handler.

“He’s by Mehmas and he’s got a lot going for him as a potential stallion, so if he could win a Group One it would make a big difference.”

Alcohol Free (6/1) is the current ante-post favourite following her July Cup triumph at Newmarket while Highfield Princess (7/1) is set to renew rivalries with Minzaal.
