The Community Shield is the traditional curtain-raiser to the new season and Liverpool and Manchester City will go head-to-head in this year’s match at the King Power Stadium (Liverpool 9/4, Draw 12/5, Man City 7/5 – Match Betting).
Pep Guardiola’s City pipped Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, although the Reds did not end the campaign empty handed as they claimed glory in both the EFL Cup and FA Cup.
Both teams will again be looking to challenge for major honours this term and the winner of Saturday’s Community Shield will lay down an early marker ahead of the new Premier League season getting underway next weekend (Liverpool EVS, Man City 8/11 – to lift the trophy).
Liverpool have injury concerns to contend with heading into the match, especially in goal, as both Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher will miss the contest, meaning third-choice keeper Adrian is in line to start.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has also been ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained during pre-season, while Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas also look set to miss out.
Summer signing Darwin Nunez (7/4 Anytime Scorer) is set to feature, however, following his summer move from Benfica. The Uruguayan netted four goals in a recent friendly victory over RB Leipzig.
City will also have a new centre forward in their ranks, with Erling Haaland (EVS Anytime Scorer) set to make his second appearance for the club after netting the only goal in their recent pre-season victory over Bayern Munich.
Fellow new arrivals Julian Alvarez and Kalvin Phillips will also hope to play some part, with Aymeric Laporte remaining City’s only confirmed absentee, as he continues to struggle with a knee issue.
City were beaten in last season’s Community Shield, losing 1-0 to Leicester City, but they have won the competition three times since Liverpool last lifted the trophy back in 2006.
