Sizzling Sunday night coronation for the three-time Betfred World Matchplay king

The great Michael van Gerwen defeated Gerwyn Price in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens – and is once again the Betfred World Matchplay champion.

The Dutch master, a little subdued by his stratospheric standards in recent seasons, found all his old verve and triumphed 18-14, raising the Phil Taylor trophy into the bargain. Price led early but had no answer to the late, late onslaught.

MVG averaged 101.19, with Price hitting 96.92. Gerwyn managed more scores of a ton-plus, but Michael won the 180s’ battle 15-9, and had the highest checkout, at 160.

An emotional MVG said “To put my hands on this trophy again means the world to me. I’ve come from a very difficult patch in my career – it means a lot to me.”

Mighty Mike is back – with a vengeance. A fittingly thrilling end to a wonderful tournament.
