Arsenal have confirmed they have signed Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira from Porto for £34.2million as boss Mikel Arteta (pictured) tries to improve his squad ahead of another push for Champions League football (Arsenal 2/1 Top 4 Finish).

Porto confirmed a deal was in place last week, suggesting that Arsenal would pay an initial £29.9million for his services while the rest of the transfer would be made up of add-ons.

Arteta is on the lookout for fresh faces after the Gunners narrowly missed out on the top four. Arsenal finished fifth, two points behind rivals Tottenham, who ended the campaign on a high to snatch the final Champions League spot.

While Arsenal (50/1 Premier League Outright) had already finalised deals for winger Marquinhos and goalkeeper Matt Turner, Vieira’s arrival is the club’s first significant move of the summer.

The 22-year-old has yet to win a senior cap for Portugal but was voted player of the tournament at last year’s European Under-21 Championship. He scored six goals and also provided a league-high 14 assists in 27 Primeira Liga outings last season, and he believes the move comes at the perfect time in his career.

He told the club’s official website: “This is an important step forward in my career.

“It certainly was a fast process. It was something that I was drawn to. Meeting the people at the club was a real positive for me. I’m loving it here, and I’m here to give the team my all.

“I’m an attacking player who looks to find space between the lines to be able to finish off moves either with assists or by scoring goals.

“I think those are the main attributes that Arsenal fans can expect from me.”
