American Justin Thomas made history as he staged a record-equalling fightback to win his second US PGA Championship, beating Will Zalatoris in a play-off (Thomas 16/ – US Open outright).

Thomas, who lifted the trophy in 2017, trailed by seven shots at the start of the day, but he posted a three-under 67 to set the clubhouse lead at five-under-par.

Chile’s Mito Pereira looked certain to win a first major title, but he lost his nerve and double-bogeyed the 18th after firing his ball into a creek. He eventually finished on four-under-par alongside Cameron Young.

Zalatoris held his nerve to force a play-off, but Thomas’ birdie back on the 17th ensured he got his hands back on the trophy.

Speaking about his success, Thomas told Sky Sports: “I know that all the players that were ahead of me are great players, but haven’t won a major and it’s a big moment.

“I mean, I know I’m very nervous, so I know that they’re very nervous, and I just tried to tell myself that all I can do is control what I can, and if it’s good enough, great, if not then so be it.

“It’s very, very special. Any time you win, it’s obviously great, but getting it done in different ways, I think, teaches a lot. It’s a great learning opportunity. I fought so hard today. I was out of it, and I was back in.

“This golf course is tough, winning a tournament is tough, winning a major is tough, and I just tried to stay patient, and I felt, when I somehow got myself in that play-off, it was time to just go and get after it and get it done.”

English pair Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick finished T5 alongside Chris Kirk, while Rory McIlroy finished eighth on two-under-par.

Thomas will now fancy his chances to win next month’s US Open, which starts on June 16th at The Country Club, Brookline.

After failing to capitalise on a strong first round, McIlroy (14/1 – US Open outright) will hope to get his hands on the trophy, while Zalatoris (33/1) is confident his first major is on the horizon.

He said:  “I didn’t have my best stuff yesterday, which obviously turns out to be the difference.

“But we’re going to get one soon. I’ve been knocking on the door in these majors for a little while, and one’s going to come soon.

“I knew I needed to keep fighting. I’ve come up one short, and it stings, but we’re going to get one soon.”
