Wakefield Trinity head coach Willie Poching has confirmed Tom Johnstone will miss the Betfred Super League game at Leeds Rhinos on Friday as they further investigate his groin injury (Match Betting – Leeds Rhinos 4/9, Tie 18/1, Wakefield Trinity 19/10).

Johnstone has been a key figure for Trinity since making his debut in 2015, scoring 91 tries in 119 appearances and that tally would likely be even higher if injuries hadn’t littered his career.

The 26-year-old has twice been sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, while he’s also had elbow and concussion problems to contend with.

Trinty were without the winger for Sunday’s trip to Toulouse, who sit bottom of the Betfred Super League standings, and his absence was clearly felt as they went down 20-14.

Poching told BBC Radio Leeds: “He’s been for scans, we’ve had a look but he won’t be ready this week.

“We’re still waiting for a little bit more investigation to get to the bottom of it. Hopefully we get an answer on that pretty soon.”

Sunday’s loss was the sixth in succession for Wakefield and they subsequently sit 11th in the standings, two points clear of Toulouse and one shy of Friday’s opponents Leeds.

England (7/1 Rugby League World Cup 2021 Outright) will also be waiting with bated breath for some positive news regarding Johnstone, who is a potential candidate to feature at the 2021 World Cup in the autumn.

Poching added: “We’re hoping that, the talent that he is, that we can get him ready and fit again especially with the cup final break coming up.

“We’ve got a bit of time to get him on the mend and then we can get him back as soon as we can.”

Wakefield will, however, be boosted by the return of Tom Lineham for the trip to Headingley after almost three months out with a knee injury.

Jacob Miller is also back in the squad after suspension, while Thomas Minns and Eddie Battye return from injury as Trinity make four changes to their squad.

Leeds have made two changes to their 21-man squad with Liam Sutcliffe back after a knee injury and Morgan Gannon available following suspension.
