It’s another busy Saturday of horse racing in the US with 10 meetings set to take place, with the highlight being the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.
The first meeting due to get underway is at Gulfstream at 16:30, where there are a bumper 14 races in total, including the prestigious Florida Derby as the finale at 23:38.
This $1,000.000 race is viewed as a key outing on the road to the Kentucky Derby and Todd Pletcher, who has won this contest six times since 2007, has a big hope in the shape of the colt drawn in stall three, Simplification (SP). He’s already a three-time winner at the course, including a Grade 2 success in the Fountain Of Youth stakes last time out, and, with Jose Ortiz on board, he will aim to get the better of his 10 rivals.
Tampa Bay Downs’ 10-race card at 17:08 is the next meeting on the agenda, before the action at Laurel Park starts at 17:40. There are nine races at the Maryland venue with the final contest scheduled for 21:54.
Aqueduct stages nine races, starting at 18:20 and finishing up after the last one at 22:50. In the opener, Montauk Point (SP), in blinkers for the first time today, stands out. He’s been placed twice in four starts so far, including when finishing third of 10 on his most recent outing at Gulfstream in February.
Hawthorne has eight races between 20:50 and 23:45 and then the meeting at Santa Anita is due to begin at 21:00, where there are nine races until the last one at 01:32. In the fourth contest, at 22:36, Betfred are paying three places as part of their ‘Extra Place Race’ promotion and it’s a seven-strong contest in which Bella Renella (SP) can shine. She has won four times from 5f to 6f, including last time when sent off as favourite here in February, and is two from two since switching yards to work under Doug O’Neill in January.
Golden Gate Fields’ meeting is set for 21:15-01:45, where there are nine races. Meanwhile, the action at both Charles Town and Remington Park starts at midnight, with the former having eight races until the 03:32 rounds things off and the latter hosts 11 races until 04:30.
Finally, the meeting at Sam Houston starts at 00:55 and there are nine races in total, running through until the closer at 04:42.
