The Africa Cup of Nations has reached the knockout stages and a heavyweight clash between Nigeria and Tunisia tops the agenda on Sunday.

Maybe somewhat surprisingly the Eagles of Carthage (20/1 – to win AFCON) have only won the competition once – in 2004 – while the Super Eagles of Nigeria (9/2) have three successes to their name, as well as having lost in the final on four further occasions.

And it is the latter who head into the showdown in Garoua, kick-off 19:00, in the highest of spirits, having won all three of their group games in reaching the last-16 (Match result – Nigeria 4/7, Tunisia 13/2, Draw 13/5).

Six goals scored and just one conceded point to a side in fine form at both ends of the pitch, with an opening 1-0 win over Egypt sending a real message to the rest of their opponents.

In contrast, Tunisia only sneaked through to the knockout stages by finishing third in Group F, losing to both Mali and Gambia, with a 4-0 victory over minnows Mauritania proving decisive.

The Super Eagles also have recent history on their side, as a third place play-off against Tunisia at AFCON in 2019 was won 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Odion Ighalo.

Earlier in the day at 16:00 Burkina Faso take on Gabon for a place in the quarter-finals (Match result – Burkina Faso 11/8, Draw 15/8, Gabon 13/5)

The Stallions of Burkina Faso have done well at recent tournaments, having made the semi-finals in 2017, while four years earlier they went all the way to the final in South Africa – where they were edged out 1-0 by Nigeria.

Gabon’s Panthers have never made it past the quarter-final stage, and with five of the six group games involving these two teams having seen both teams score, that may be worth considering again in this fixture at 5/4.
