Ousmane Dembele could be one of the key players in the January transfer window after Barcelona confirmed he would be sold following his refusal to sign a new contract.

The Catalan club have been trying to persuade the 24-year-old French winger to stick around at the Nou Camp as they seek to rebuild their squad under Xavi.

However, Dembele has turned down Barca’s offer of a new deal and now he is set to be sold before the January deadline.

He is out of contract in the summer and the club need to recoup some money and get his wages off the payroll in order to ease their financial worries.

Dembele cost Barcelona £135million when he joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 but his time in Spain has been a disappointment, largely due to his poor record with injuries.

He has made a slight renaissance under Xavi, with ten of his 11 appearances this season, coming under the Spaniard, but a fresh start is the likely outcome, according to club sporting director Mateu Alemany.

“We understand that Dembele does not want to continue with Barcelona, and our final stance has been communicated to him. We want committed players, and we have told him that has to leave the club as soon as possible,” he said.

“We told Dembele he has to leave. We expect him to be sold before January 31st.”

He has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs as well as teams around Europe, but where is the likeliest fit?

Of those in England, Liverpool (Premier League outright 10/1) have been strongly linked with bringing in a new wide player, and he could be a good short-term fix with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.

Manchester United (Top four 13/8) are also thought to be in the running but given the plentiful options they have in attacking areas, that might seem unlikely.

One club which has emerged recently as a contender is Newcastle (Relegation 10/11) with their massive wealth meaning they could theoretically sign any player they wanted.

Marquee signings could be on the agenda for Eddie Howe’s side and a World Cup-winning winger from Barcelona might tick the boxes for the Magpies.

In terms of clubs abroad, Dembele could consider a return to Borussia Dortmund (Bundesliga outright 12/1) as they seek a replacement for Jadon Sancho, while Erling Haaland’s future in is doubt.

Finally, if Dembele wishes to return to his homeland then PSG (Champions League outright 11/1) might be willing to take a punt, given the fact Kylian Mbappe is set to leave in the summer.

It will certainly be an interesting transfer to follow.
