Betfred boss Fred Done thinks Manchester United should appoint current favourite Mauricio Pochettino (4/9 to be Next Man Utd Manager) as their next manager – and the sooner the better.

After parting ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday, following a 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road, United are already on the hunt for his successor.

The club have appointed Michael Carrick to take over managerial duties as caretaker boss, before the appointment of an interim manager which will then lead to a permanent appointment, but Fred is having none of it.

“I think he [Pochettino] should be the favourite,” he said.

“He’s over in Manchester at the moment with PSG. I think they should say ‘don’t get back on that plane, stay here, we want you,’ never mind waiting until the end of the season.

“Manchester United can’t afford to wait until the end of the season, we need Pochettino.

“If you want the job Pochettino put your hand up, get negotiating, stay here. We look at the club, we need a manager, a good strong manager, and I think Pochettino is that man.”

Fred isn’t so enthused by the prospect of a certain Frenchman, however.

He said: “I would discount Zidane (10/1 to be the Next Man Utd Manager) because his wife doesn’t want to come to Manchester, and if your wife doesn’t want to come, you’re not going to be happy, unless you want to change your wife!”

On the outgoing boss, Fred had some kind words: “Ole will always be well-regarded at the club. It’s not worked in this position but we’ll remember him as a player, and his heart has always been Manchester.

“As things turn out, I think it was inevitable. But I look at Ole, and the fans look at Ole, as a great player, a quiet man who never caused any problems. He scored in the European Cup final – I think he’s been a great servant for Manchester United.

“He took over from the train wreck that Mourinho left there. It was a massive, horrible experience having Mourinho at the club. The morale at the club was rock bottom. Ole came in and lifted it.

“When he got the job my belief was it would take five years to make a team out of it. What he did was he took it from rock bottom to a stage where, with his signings, he boosted morale. He did a fair job, but after three years he reached his limit.

“A friend asked me if I’d put him in the top six managers in the world, and honestly as a supporter of Ole I had to say no. The Premier League is full of good managers – Klopp, Pep, Tuchel and now with Conte. I think they’re all very good managers. A team like Manchester United needs a top manager.”

Top manager or not, Fred is envious of the set-up at Manchester City, both on and off the pitch.

He went on: “I look at the other half of Manchester and I’m very disappointed with what we’ve done.

“I go to Old Trafford every week because my heart is Manchester United, but I look at all the facilities at City, even down to the catering, and City blow us out of the water. My heart is still at Old Trafford, but we’re miles behind the pace now.”

He believes that, while the club is spending money, those in charge of what and who to spend it on need to improve.

“Some of the signings we’ve made in the summer, you can’t blame the Glazers for it, they got their cheque book out,” he added.

“We’ve signed Sancho, Ronaldo, Varane – they were all expensive signings. While I can’t criticise the Glazers recently for getting their money out, what I would say is they’re not football people, they’re business people, and United are run as a business with not much thought for the future.”
