Few football fans had even heard of Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol – and even fewer would have bet on them to beat European aristocrats Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Unless you’re Betfred punter Modou Sanyang Tamba, who backed them to win the Group D tie on Tuesday night as part of his five-fold accumulator.
The 44-year-old security guard and youth worker from Nottingham said: “I picked out Dortmund to beat Sporting, Atletico to topple AC Milan and Liverpool to triumph over Porto. They were all favourites, and then I fancied PSG to beat Manchester City and my maverick pick was Sheriff, who I’d not even heard of.”
All five of his selections won, turning his £10 wager into £4,039.
Father-of-one Modou added: “I was watching the matches unfold on TV and was leaping around with joy, especially because of the upset in Spain.
“What am I going to do with my winnings? Well, I’m going to get some new furniture for my house and have the garden done up – and I’m going to send some money to my wife in Gambia too.”
Betfred boss Fred Done said: “To pick out total unknowns from Moldova to win at the Bernabeu is frankly remarkable. Good luck to this fella who has proved once again you can win big from a small stake.”
