Rangers (4/9 fav – Scottish Premiership outright) continued to build up to the new Scottish Premiership season with a hugely-impressive 2-1 friendly victory over Spanish giants Real Madrid on Sunday.
Steven Gerrard helped Rangers clinch their 55th Scottish Premiership title last season, going through the entire league campaign without losing a single match.
It was the first league crown for the ‘Gers in 10 years and finally broke Celtic’s monopoly on the top honours in Scotland.
Backing up that achievement could prove difficult with their Old Firm rivals likely to come back fighting after bringing in a new manager in the shape of Ange Postecoglou.
Performing in pre-season isn’t always guaranteed to bring success when it really matters but a 2-1 win over Real Madrid will do confidence levels absolutely no harm.
Sunday’s triumph at Ibrox saw Los Blancos go ahead through Rodrygo early on before new signing Fashion Sakala equalised for the home side and then Cedric Itten bagged the winner after Nacho had been sent off.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard was full of praise for Zambia international Sakala, who joined on a free deal from Oostende earlier this summer.
“We still need to help him and polish the diamond,” Gerrard told RangersTV.
“There’s still loads to come in terms of fitness, in terms of getting him up to speed, in terms of the information we are giving him. But one thing I will say is that he’s come in with an incredible attitude. He’s been an absolute role model to everyone.”
Rangers have won two, drawn two and lost one of their pre-season engagements ahead of their Premiership opener against Livingston on Saturday (Match betting – Rangers 1/5, draw 5/1, Livingston 12/1).
