Dina Asher-Smith is 5/1 at Betfred to win the Women’s 200m at the Tokyo Olympics that got underway with England Women beating Chile 2-0 in the football opener.

The London-based sprinter, who is one of Team GB’s leading medal hopes on the track, is also 6/1 to win the Blue Riband 100m.

Betting interest in the Games reached a pinnacle at the 2012 London Olympics, and this summer’s event in Japan has already been affected by Covid withdrawals and the absence of fans in the stadia – however, betting has been brisk ahead of the action in Tokyo.

Betfred have USA strong favourites at 1/10 to win the most gold medals, ahead of China at 7/1.

For the most medals overall, USA are also overwhelming favourites at 1/20, while Great Britain are 50/1.

Any medal success for Dina Asher-Smith would drastically affect the betting for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Asher-Smith, who we will get to see in action on Friday 30 July in the 100m heats, is currently 10/3 second favourite at Betfred to win the award behind popular Isle of Man-based cyclist Mark Cavendish (5/2), who recently matched Eddy Merckx’s record of stage wins in the Tour de France.

If Team GB’s poster girl leaves Tokyo with a medal, it’s very likely she’ll shorten into favouritism for SPOTY.
