Four childhood friends went their separate ways in the construction industry … but it was the dream of winning big on the New York Lottery that kept them in touch.
And now thanks to Betfred that loyalty to one another has paid off handsomely, after winning £17,500 from a wager of just ONE POUND.
Each month for more than ten years they have taken turns selecting numbers for the weekly wager at the Betfred shop at Cardiff Road, Newport, South Wales.
And last weekend it was steel erector Colin Barnett was opted for numbers 3, 7, 11 and 22 on behalf of scaffolder Paul, fitter Charlie, and machine maintenance worker also called Colin – and those numbers were all drawn out.
“The toast next time we can all get to the pub together is certainly going to be me,” said Colin, aged 60, who lives near the shop.
“We have known each other since childhood and take turns each month to pick the numbers and get the bet on, for which we pay 25p each. I just picked random numbers, and none of us can quite believe what we’ve won with just a £1.
“We will of course be sharing out the £17,500 equally. What are we going to do with the winnings? Well, we won’t be going to New York that’s for sure. What we will be doing is each of us putting some money into a kitty to use next time, hopefully soon, that we can head off to Chester races.”
Colin added: “It’s my biggest success since I won £10,000 on a Lucky 15 more than 15 years ago. The four of us have kept in touch since childhood, and nowadays rarely work on the same construction sites, but we know each month we have the responsibility to each other to put the weekly £1 on for the New York draw. It’s a fantastic feeling to have finally won big!”
Betfred boss Fred Done said: “I’m chuffed to bits for these fellas. I hope they have a cracking time at the Roodee (pictured above), having picked my pocket big time. Maybe I’ll get an invitation to join them as the track is just down the road from Betfred’s HQ.”
