We’re back with another FA Cup treble!
Yes – the FA Cup returns once again this weekend. There are some mouth-watering cup ties in prospect, namely a North-West derby between Manchester United and Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.
But, we’re still searching for that second treble of the season, and our last cup treble nearly came in! Arsenal beating Newcastle in extra-time in their third-round clash meant we fell just short, as we predicted the Gunners to do the business in 90 minutes.
Therefore, we should stress that these picks are based, as always, on the result after 90 minutes.
Let’s get stuck in!
Southampton v Arsenal
Our first selection comes from the all-Premier League clash between Southampton and current holders Arsenal at St. Mary’s.
This is definitely one of the standout ties of the fourth-round of the FA Cup.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side come into this game off the back of successive home victories, including a 1-0 win over Liverpool in the Premier League at the start of the month, and an excellent 2020-21 campaign to date has left the club in ninth spot in the table ahead of their next league game on January 26, which is also against the Gunners.
Arsenal seemed to have turned a corner in recent weeks, and a dominant performance against Newcastle in a 3-0 win on Monday evening will give the side some much needed confidence.
Both sides played out a 1-1 draw in the league just over a month ago, so this is a tough one to predict.
However, it’s been almost two years since Arsenal lost an FA Cup tie, so we fancy the holders to get the job done here.
Arsenal to win at 13/10.
Sheffield United v Plymouth Argyle
Our next little nugget (hopefully) comes from Bramall Lane.
Sheffield United have had a dismal Premier League campaign so far, and their 3-2 win in the previous round against Bristol Rovers was their first win in any competition this season.
It seemed to have a positive effect on the side, as they followed that result up with their Premier League win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United, before losing 3-1 to Spurs. So the FA Cup could provide them with a welcomed distraction.
Argyle do enter this game on a good run of form though, thanks to three wins and a draw in their last four matches in all competitions. But Chris Wilder will surely see this game as an opportunity to advance to the next round, and a chance to build some momentum which his side can take into their league campaign.
We fancy a Sheffield United win at 4/9.
Barnsley v Norwich City
Our final gem comes from the all-Championship affair between table toppers Norwich City and Barnsley.
While the Canaries sit seven points clear at the top of the second-tier standings, Barnsley have dropped down to 11th position, after three successive defeats.
The Tykes have lost their last three games in the league, including a 1-0 defeat to Saturday’s opponents Norwich at the start of the month.
Meanwhile, Daniel Farke’s side continue to go from strength-to-strength, winning their last three in the Championship.
We think the Canaries will bring their league form into this one. Norwich win at 11/8.
Arsenal to beat Southampton
Sheffield United to beat Plymouth Argyle
Norwich City to beat Barnsley
