It may not shake the world like the Trump saga stateside this week, but the sporting news agenda took on its own piece of Trump drama yesterday with the news that Judd had to withdraw from this year’s Betfred Masters after testing positive for Covid-19, alongside recent World Grand Prix runner-up Jack Lisowski.
They have been replaced by the ‘travelling reserves’ which will now see Joe Perry line up first match of the tournament against David Gilbert at 1pm this afternoon, and we will also be guaranteed a Wilson in the last eight as Gary Wislon has replaced Lisowski and will face his namesake Kyren this evening, in the best of eleven frames first round encounters.
The news filtered through late yesterday afternoon and caused an instant shake up in the betting market which saw Neil Robertson and Ronnie O’Sullivan assume joint market leadership at 7/2.
If you believe in fate taking its course, you can back Joe Perry at 66/1 and Gary Wilson at 80/1 to become Betfred Masters Champion next Sunday, with their eleventh hour invites.
7/2 Robertson, O’Sullivan, 5/1 Selby, 15/2 Kyren Wilson, 12/1 Higgins, 14/1 Allen, 16/1 Murphy Bingham, 18/1 Junhui, 25/1 Williams, 33/1 Maguire, 40/1 Bingtao, 50/1 Gilbert, 66/1 Perry, 66/1 Un Nooh 80/1 Gary Wilson
Both Trump and Lisowski felt ok upon leaving the bubble and heading home to self-isolate, and hopefully we will see them both back on the baize very soon. Our best wishes go out to both players.
So the drama has started in Milton Keynes before a cue ball is struck, and we wish all sixteen players a healthy and successful tournament.
We are thankful to the World Snooker Tour for their efforts this week in testing times and despite this major being robbed of a former winner and World Champion, it proves their methods are working in providing a safe sporting arena for some world class sport.
Stay Safe. Protect the NHS. Stay In, and watch the Snooker.
